BT awards and praise

Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2009

On 16 June 2009 in London Global Telecoms Business magazine presented representatives of BT Global Services and Alcatel-Lucent with the Innovation Award 2009 in the category Managed Services for their achievement in legacy network transformation.

The GTB Innovation Awards honour innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers.

The innovations award for Alcatel-Lucent and BT Global Services recognised the international dimension of a contract signed between the two companies for the management of BT Global Services’ legacy network platforms, through the transfer of the operations of those networks to Alcatel-Lucent.

Several hundred former BT staff people have transferred to Alcatel-Lucent as part of the contract, complemented by specialist offshore centres created to handle engineering, network migrations and operations.

Alcatel-Lucent and BT Global Services were delighted to have their global network transformation project recognised by Global Telecoms Business.

Global Telecoms Business - founded in 1993 and part of the Euromoney Institutional Investor group of publications - is the only magazine written specifically for the senior managers who run telecoms carriers worldwide.

BT wins Go Green Award

BT was named the winner of the Go Green Award at this year's InfoVision Europe Awards, announced at the Broadband World Forum Europe in Paris. These awards are organised by The International Engineering Consortium and recognise "technologies, applications, products and services judged to be the most unique and beneficial to the ICT industry."

InfoVision's Go Green category, new this year, is judged upon organisations' efforts to reduce the CO2 emissions of their global business and those of their customers. The winning company would be one which has "implemented environmentally friendly practices or programs that benefit both the environment and the telecommunications industry".

BT joins sustainable elite

BT has received a top honour for its ongoing commitment to tackling concerns such as climate change and social issues.

Business in the Community (BiTC) - a group of companies which encourages its members to improve their impact on society - awarded BT "platinum plus recognition".

Only companies that rank highest in BiTC's annual corporate responsibility index are eligible for platinum plus status.

BT has been included in the top 100 rankings every year since the index was launched in 2002 and was BiTC 2007 Company of the Year.

Chief sustainability officer Chris Tuppen said: "In recent years there has been a cluster of leading companies at the top end of BiTC's corporate responsibility index.

"Platinum plus has been designed to identify the front runners and, as a result of a great team effort, BT has made it into this elite group. This is further evidence of BT's continued commitment to responsible and sustainable business."

As part of its evaluation process, BiTC met with senior directors including BT Retail chief executive and corporate responsibility sponsor Gavin Patterson; chief customer innovation officer Paul Excell; director of public affairs Tim O'Sullivan; managing director of lead to cash Ralph Steffens; director of people and policy Caroline Waters; and chief procurement officer Neil Rogers.

The BiTC corporate responsibility index is the UK's leading benchmark of responsible business - measuring a company’s performance on how it is integrating corporate responsibility within its core business practices.

BiTC said BT has created strong links between business strategy and sustainability - "which flow throughout the organisation".

It said: "The senior managers who were interviewed during the evaluation process demonstrated clarity about sustainability in their part of the business and were able to envision the company in the future and the contribution that it could make to climate change and social issues that are facing the world but also that directly arise from their business model."

SEED award for solar installation

BT Americas has won a SoCal Environmental Excellence Development (SEED) award for its solar installation in El Segundo, Los Angeles. The award program is run by the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition. The award was in the category of Carbon Footprint Reduction.

BT is a large global company and has the opportunity to be recognized in large programs such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). But there is something especially rewarding about local recognition such as this. Especially so in El Segundo, where there is a focus on the environment from the City (the award ceremony will be hosted by the Mayor Kelly McDowell) and from the business community. It highlights the connection between local action and global impact.

To read more about the solar installation in El Segundo, read the article "BT 'Goes Solar' at North American Headquarters" in this issue of the Global Telecom News.
