Meet Ralph Hengstenberg, director of BT Telconsult Europe
What excites you about working in the GTM? About your job?
I enjoy the fast-moving market environment and global nature of our business, working with customers across different countries and cultures and understanding their business needs. Our markets are in a constant state of change, not only due to the current global financial crisis, but also through market disruptions, whether from new technologies, devices, or from regulatory changes and new market entrants.
This opens up new opportunities to work with our customers on their journeys - and this is what excites me most. It's exciting and challenging to bring strong teams together and to work closely with customers on the client site.
What would you like your customers to know about BT Telconsult?
BT Telconsult has always focused on working closely with its customers rather than running extensive marketing campaigns. Therefore we have built an excellent reputation with our key clients, but we are still a bit of a hidden jewel when compared to the big management consultancies.
As we are generally more practitioner-led than the big mainstream consultancies, we can add significant value to our clients not just on the strategy and conceptual level, but also in the actual execution and implementation. We leverage the long-standing experience and thought leadership of BT and from our external clients, to bring value to our customers' business priorities.
The advantage that we have being part of BT is, that BT has never been afraid of being a first mover in the telecommunications industry - being the first incumbent to go through privatization and market liberalization, the first for a radical Next Generation Network, the first for functional separation by creating our Openreach division, introducing concepts such as Open Innovation, etc, etc.
By engaging BT Telconsult our customers can learn effectively from BT’s experiences - the good ones and the bad ones - in order to de-risk their own strategies and projects.
Do you have a personal vision or mission statement?
My motto would probably be "Live life to the max", but with a strong respect for our environment, cultures and societies.
I also believe that every change brings new opportunities, and that adapting to new circumstances and continuous learning are key necessities to be successful and content - however one defines his/her personal success.
My professional mission is to stay at the forefront of developments in the ICT market place in order to generate and deliver successful projects with customers.
Where have you lived around the world?
I grew up in Cologne, Germany and have lived in the UK, France and the Netherlands. I am currently based in the UK but have done business globally (Europe, Asia, US, Latin America, Middle East/Africa) over the last 5-10 years.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
My spare time is very much dedicated to my wife and our four children, as well as my passion for sports – especially windsurfing, surfing, football and rugby.
What would you like to say in closing?
I am keen to get to know new customers and to explore the challenges they face. While we are always willing to share some insights into how BT has handled challenges, the real value that we can bring comes though engaging our consultants in a project with you.
I will be contributing regularly to Global Telecom News and I look forward to hearing from you.
