Let's talk Voice

Welcome to Let's talk Voice, where we share with you the latest developments in BT’s Premium Wholesale Voice services.

Premium Wholesale Voice services have seen continued growth, global expansion and new product opportunities as we continue to develop and maximise the value of our voice and non-voice portfolio, in spite of the challenging global environment.

New Innovations

Following a successful technical trial in the first quarter of 2009-10 between Manx Telecom and China Mobile via BT, we will launch our SMS hubbing product to 80 international destinations in the current quarter. Our voice business managers look forward to speaking to you about SMS Hubbing.

We are pleased to report that BT is in the implementation phase of VoIP with its first bilateral partner, Telecom Italia, for a SIP-I, Q1912.5 for 300 simultaneous calls via point-to-point Ethernet connection from its UK node Ericsson platform. This will be the world’s second commercially active SIP-I interconnection, the largest to date and the world's first for G729 codec. Despite a learning curve for both partners, successful voice test calls have now been made, before opening to live traffic.

More Direct Relationships

BT continues its programme of direct voice interconnects to additional mobile operators in Africa and Asia, and has recently opened service with Vodafone Qatar, Zain Sudan, Zain Saudi Arabia, Philippines Globe, and Afghanistan Roshan. BT was honoured to be the preferred/chosen voice partner of Roshan, selected out of 10 original candidates in a tender process.

We would like to welcome to the BT network two new Premium Voice customers/partners in Bahrain: 2Connect and MENA.

Major voice services agreement with TATA Communications Ltd.

BT signed a major voice services agreement that will allow two of the world's largest providers of voice and IP services to mutually benefit from each other's shared resources as part of a global supply arrangement. Through the five-year agreement, Tata Communications will become BT's primary supplier of voice termination services outside BT's own footprint countries and BT will become Tata Communication's main distribution channel for its voice traffic into the UK, expanding into other markets across Europe as the relationship matures.

In the words of Andrew Dodsworth, Head of Commercial Management, Strategy & Products in BT Global Telecom Markets, "By providing each party with access to additional capacity and flexibility, this relationship will allow BT to grow its global business more aggressively with a world-class cost base.

"Tata Communications is a leader in the international wholesale voice business, making them a perfect partner to help us achieve additional economies of scale to those of our own. We look forward to maximising the opportunities this relationship presents to our customers as we expand our portfolio of wholesale products and services and ultimately strive to become even more competitive with our pricing."
