From the desk of Mike DeVito
My team and I enjoyed seeing many of you at ITW. I don't know about you, but I thought the mood there was much more upbeat than last year. It feels like the winter is over and we're starting to grow again.
We were talking about Interoperability at ITW. As you probably know, the global communications industry has initiated its transition from a C7/TDM to a SIP/IP interconnect model and many communications providers (CPs) have begun to interconnect their voice networks at the IP layer. This saves money, delivers feature-rich IP services such as high-definition voice, and enables other advanced services such as video calling which cannot be used on traditional TDM networks.
IP Interoperability therefore provides seamless integration between traditional TDM and IP-based infrastructures and, where possible, it eliminates SIP-TDM-SIP signalling mediation and trans-coding to allow CPs to exchange voice or video end to end across IP networks. This preserves value-added services for the benefit of subscribers.
Just as importantly, our IP Interoperability services are not just about voice, but represent a full Interoperability suite for the interconnection, management and billing of IP traffic. This allows communications providers to terminate voice or multimedia applications such as video, online gaming, online music, messaging, social networking and presence as well as a very wide range of business productivity applications anywhere in the world, over any network, to any device, with high quality levels.
In summary, our IP Interoperability services are designed to simplify the technical and commercial complexities of interoperating, leaving our Customers free to concentrate on meeting the needs of their end customers.
This issue of Global Telecom News includes the announcement of the global availability of our IP Exchange platform and an article about how IP Interoperability supports the development and provision of new value-added services. And the current issue of Connect-World carries an article that I was invited to write about IP interoperability and sustainability.
In addition, it is worth noting that our customers can benefit from the interface between BT's Ribbit and our IP Exchange platforms to deliver rapid proof of concept, improved time to market and lower development costs for IP based applications and communications. Our unique Ribbit platform provides an open programming environment, applications, new developer communities, and development services that make it possible for carriers like you to derive new value from your current networks. For more information about Ribbit, see the article "Taking wholesale voice services to the next level".
In signing off I'd like to wish you a great summer. I'll write to you again in September. Meanwhile, if there's anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to contact me.
See you next year at ITW - if not before!
All the best,
Mike
