Luis Alvarez on Spanish telco market

The Spanish telecoms market has come on in leaps and bounds but the country's internet users should be prepared to pay more for the best services.

That's the verdict of Luis Alvarez, president of BT Global Services EMEA and Latin America. He shared his views in Spain's leading weekday financial newspaper, El Economista, following his participation in the session on Europe at the recent World Economic Forum in Brussels.

Luis said the presence of global companies and competent authorities had helped develop the market.

He added that, while some progress has been made in addressing high pricing and lack of competition, more still needed to be done to meet the demands of customers seeking better service and pricing.

Further improvements he highlighted included regulatory requirements around next generation and ethernet services.

On Spain's proposal to charge internet users a new 'Google tax' on using search engines and social networking sites, with the money used to boost the telecoms network, Luis said it was logical for internet providers and users to pay more for better services.

He said there would be a differentiation between this group and those who would pay less for a lower quality service.
