BT/Telecom Italia Sparkle VoIP connection - SIP-I is working
BT has the first dedicated fixed capacity VoIP route with Telecom Italia Sparkle, using SIP-I signalling and a Fast Ethernet connection
After six months of weekly conference calls, and with help from BT Design and BT Operate, BT has its first dedicated fixed capacity VoIP route (without using public internet), linking it with Telecom Italia Sparkle. The route uses SIP-I signalling and a Fast Ethernet connection into Telecom Italia Sparkle's POP at London Harbour Exchange.
BT's trial is the world's first for SIP-I using G729 codec for efficient use of bandwidth for carrier voice. SIP-I encapsulates all the features of C7 signalling in the TDM world, which ordinary SIP does not, and can be used for ISDN functionality.
The lessons learned from this trial are invaluable for future implementations to upgrade the network with many more carriers in a fraction of the time. Some of the delays resulted from vendors' loose interpretation of IP standards. "Trial and error" at some stages helped BT and the vendors to iron these out.
